I don't have the time to try and convince you

My family was in town and we were having dinner. My brother asked if I saw the new FTX banner while watching the World Series. That sent my sister in to a soap box.

"Crypto is bad for the environment." "It's too late to earn any money." "Only banks and institutional investors are buying right now." "It's really just an immoral investment."

My sister has become quite outspoken about her political leanings recently in the past few years and usually is outspoken and looking to debate. It felt like bait so I just decided just to ignore it.

I was reminded of the quote "If you don't believe it or don't get it, I don't have the time to try to convince you, sorry."

There is so much positive energy in this space I just didn't feel the need to try to convince someone who had already made up their mind. I had better things to do.

A New Academic Paper Describes 3 Attack Methods Against an Ethereum PoS Chain

Following the Altair upgrade on the Ethereum network, the protocol’s native cryptocurrency reached a new all-time price high. Altair is the next step for the Ethereum’s network’s proof-of-stake (PoS) transition. However, a recently submitted white paper explains that a group of computer scientists from Stanford University and the Ethereum Foundation believe there are three attack vectors “on [a] proof-of-stake Ethereum” blockchain.

The 3 Attacks Against Ethereum Thesis Aims to Describe a Proof-of-Stake Problem Based on Evidence

The Ethereum network currently has a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism and in time, the protocol plans to fully transition into a proof-of-stake (PoS) network. Recent upgrades like Berlin, London, and Altair have been applied to help smooth the transition toward the PoS goal. Just recently, after Altair was implemented, the price per ether skyrocketed toward a new all-time high (ATH) at $4,467 per unit.

At the same time, network transfer fees have also swelled significantly as high as $50 for the average ether transaction on Saturday morning. Furthermore, on Saturday morning in the U.S. vertical trends from Twitter indicate the term “ETH 2.0” started trending. Some of the individuals discussing the ETH 2.0 upgrade have shared a new white paper written by computer scientists from Stanford University and the Ethereum Foundation.

The BTC proponent Tuur Demeester shared the paper on Saturday and two quotes from the paper that theorize how an adversary can attack the chain. The paper called “Three Attacks on Proof-of-Stake Ethereum” was submitted on October 19.

The white paper was authored by Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Joachim Neu, Barnabé Monnot, Aditya Asgaonkar, Ertem Nusret Tas, and David Tse. Essentially, the white paper reveals that two Ethereum network attacks were presented in recent times and the paper’s authors refined the techniques.

In addition to the refinement of the first two which theoretically create “short-range reorganizations” and an “adversarial network delay,” the computer scientists came up with a third attack.

“Combining techniques from both refined attacks, we obtain a third attack which allows an adversary with vanishingly small fraction of stake and no control over network message propagation (assuming instead probabilistic message propagation) to cause even long-range consensus chain reorganizations,” the paper’s authors note. The three attacks to ETH PoS paper adds:

Honest-but-rational or ideologically motivated validators could use this attack to increase their profits or stall the protocol, threatening incentive alignment and security of PoS Ethereum. The attack can also lead to destabilization of consensus from congestion in vote processing.

White Paper Says Attacks ‘Also Enable aPriori Malign Actors to Outright Stall Consensus Decisions’

Meanwhile, Ethereum network critics used the paper to highlight the possible vulnerabilities associated with these attacks when the network transitions to a full PoS system. The founder of the Chia project and the creator of Bittorrent, Bram Cohen, also tweeted about the new study on Saturday.

A Chia proponent responded and told Cohen: “Let’s revisit your tweet in a year and see what Chia has accomplished vs ETH. Please consider your attitude is turning away community members like myself.” The Ethereum attacks paper does provide a possible method of attacks against an Ethereum PoS chain, but also offers solutions. The paper’s authors believe the attacks provide incentives to malicious actors.

“Our attacks also enable apriori malign actors, perhaps ideologically motivated, to delay and in some cases outright stall consensus decisions,” the paper’s authors conclude. “The refined attack of Section 4.2 gives the adversary a tool to do just that, even if the adversary cannot control message propagation delays (which instead are assumed to be probabilistic).”

I made a "how to get the crypto money out" template for family members who lose a loved one

Hi all,

I have crypto stored in multiple wallets and exchanges all over the place. In the unlikely event that I die, I still want my family to have access to my funds. Unfortunately, my kids are still very young and nobody else in the family has the slightest idea how to operate in the crypto world.

So, I made a "how to get the crypto money out" template for family members who lose a loved one. I tried not to get too technical, only really covering the basics, but still all the necessary details to withdraw the funds. I'm happy to accept some feedback and modify with some suggestions. It's set up as a View-only but downloadable Google Doc If anyone wishes to use it.

Obviously, I hope it's never needed, but what I fear more is my kids future being negatively impacted because I was too lazy to set up some basic information for them.

How do I retrieve the BTC from this piece of paper with Bitcoin. This was back in the day where they’d put Bitcoin QR codes on pieces of promotional paper with a Bitcoin logo for adoption purposes. I found the wallet address and see the Bitcoin is still there. Is it lost for good or can I retrieve it?

Vitalik’s SHIB donations look pretty generous right now

As many of you may know, SHIB really kicked off it’s popularity by depositing a huge amount of it into Vitalik Buterin’s wallet. He responded by donating it to several causes, including 50 trillion SHIB to the India Covid Relief Fund. At the time it was worth about $1.14 billion, so a nice little payout, but we all knew there’s no way you can cash nearly that much without tanking the value. As of late July, $20 million worth had been cashed out, with plans for another $20 million in the works.

Today, however, SHIB is at ATH and that 50 trillion is worth $3.35 billion. Not a bad war chest! While it’s still true that India can’t cash it all out at once, the fact that there’s so much liquidity in the SHIB market right now means that they can probably sell some more effectively than they could before.

Excellent work as always Vitalik. It should be noted that he also made donations to life extension and AI projects that will now be able to benefit from the price spike. In a roundabout way, this crazy SHIB surge has done a lot of good for the world.

Edit: as many people commented, this donation has been completely cashed out. Thanks for showing the block explorer u/jazzlike_row ! They still seem to have gotten nearly half a billion out of it, so it was a great service to humanity, and probably won’t hurt with crypto adoption in India either.

The mentality of a meme coin investor

You are sitting there on your swivel chair in front of the PC, neck slumped forward from years of bad posture, watching your portfolio slowly bleed out for the 100th time. You are browsing coin market cap and see that another fucking dog coin has somehow entered the top 100. This one is called Shiba Inu. You just shake your head and go back to browsing.

A few weeks later you notice that it's somehow broken into the top 50. "probably nothing" you think, and alt-tab back into Steam.

Another month goes by. Somehow Shiba just keeps gaining value. You discover an entire subreddit dedicated to the coin. You read some of the comments. "those poor, deluded fools" you think to yourself, sniggering away. You go to sleep knowing that's its only a matter of time before the dump happens.

A week later the dump does indeed happen. Shiba loses 40% in a matter of hours. You race to the CryptoCurrency subreddit to join the rest of the neckbeards gleefully posting about people losing money. "how could people not know its a scam lmao" you post with cheetos encrusted fingers.

A few months go by, and Shiba is all but forgotten. But while browsing twitter looking for Cardano's latest hype tweet, you notice that Elon Musk has tweeted a picture of his new dog which looks suspiciously like a Shiba breed. Before you could leave a scathing reply, you notice that Shiba gained 100% in the past hour. Shiba is now in the top 30.

"What the fuck!" you angrily post in the IOTA subreddit. "How does a meme coin have more value than my precious feeless coin? We have partnerships!" you go to bed in a daze.

Some time goes by, and then one day you wake up and realize Shiba has been listed on Coinbase overnight. "What kind of people are running Coinbase?" you think to yourself. "if I was the CEO, I would list NANO, doesn't coinbase care about making money?" "Bunch of idiots"

Shiba is now in the top 20. There is at least 10 posts a day in /r/CryptoCurrency talking about people who have made life changing gains. You downvote every one of them, but still don't invest.

Shiba gains another 100% over the following 2 days. A bad feeling starts gnawing away inside your brain. "why didn't a invest earlier?" you moan out loud. Your favourite coin, Stellar, is slowly bleeding out while this shitcoin is mooning day by day. That evening, you read a post "if you just invested $1000 few months ago, you would be a millionaire right now". You spend a sleepless night in bed.

On the bus ride to work next day, you watch Tik Tok videos of 18 year olds driving their lambos and giving investment advice to the seasoned bankers of Wall Street. "All thanks to Shiba" they say with a shit eating grin. Shiba has now passed Doge Coin by market cap. Upon arriving at work, a coworker asks you condescendingly "how's that Vechain invesent going bro? You must have made bank." he claps you on the back and walks away laughing. The secretary at your company overhears this and asks you how to buy Shiba. You give her an incredulous look. "But if Shiba goes to $1, I'll be a millionaire!" She smiles at you expectantly. You manage to choke down your rage and walk away.

When checking blockfolio while taking a shit on company time, you discover that Shiba has gained another 70% in the past hour. Shiba is now number 6 on coin market cap. Something inside you snaps. You race back home that evening and YOLO 10k into Shib. You get the funds by selling your precious Bitcoin. "it's not like Bitcoin is becoming more and more adopted, its old and slow technology" is your final thought before closing Brave.

Before you go to sleep, you check your portfolio one last time. Your well researched portfolio consisting of coins which are making a difference in the world is down 10%. Shiba is up another 25%. "so this is what it feels like" you think to yourself.

That night, in some dark corner of the internet, the 4-5 billionaires who have been manipulating the market and Internet forums these past 6 months check their algorithms and trading bots. Enough new retail investors have FOMO'd in. "time to open the short positions".

When waking up the next morning, you discover Shiba is down over 50%. Panicking, you search the Internet for answers. It turned out that 3-4 large wallets controlled over 60% of the Shib supply, and they all decided to sell at the same time. Gnashing your teeth, you sell back into bitcoin at a 60% loss. "I'll never touch meme coins again".

That evening, you notice that a new meme coin called Kisha Inu has entered the top 100....

CBDC Could Increase Nigeria’s GDP by $29 Billion in 10 Years: President Buhari

The Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, suggested in a recent speech that the new e-naira central bank digital currency (CBDC) could lead to an increase in the value of his country’s GDP by $29 billion in ten years.

Africa’s First CBDC

President Buhari made bold remarks in his speech at Monday’s launch of the e-naira CBDC, stating: “Indeed, some estimates indicate that the adoption of CBDC and its underlying technology, called blockchain, can increase Nigeria’s GDP by US$29 billion over the next 10 years.” In addition to boosting Nigeria’s GDP, President Buhari suggested that such a digital currency might help move more people and businesses from the informal sector to the formal sector.

Although he acknowledges that many countries are still in the research and experimental stages, the Nigerian leader insists that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) — which he says has been investigating CBDCs since 2017 — is well-positioned to launch the digital currency.

In his speech, published by Premium Times, Buhari gives his reasons for approving the CBN’s request to explore the possibility of issuing what is now Africa’s first CBDC. He explained:

This move was underpinned by the fact that the CBN has been a leading innovator in the form of money they produce, and in the payment services they deploy for efficient transactions. They have invested heavily in creating a payment system that is ranked in the top ten in the world and certainly the best in Africa.

E-Naira to Boost Monetary Policy Effectiveness

According to the president, it is on the basis of this payment system — as well as the central bank’s support of several private‐sector initiatives to improve the existing payments landscape — that CBN is qualified to issue the e-naira.

However, despite his high praise of Nigeria’s financial system, President Buhari said the pilot phase of the CBDC rollout will need to be closely monitored and supervised. Finally, when successfully tested, the e-naira is expected to help increase remittances, foster cross-border trade, improve financial inclusion, and make monetary policy more effective.

I Quit. I am free.

Hi all,

I wrote a post yesterday that I was considering quitting my job and yes. I submitted my resignation letter today.

Packed my stuff in the office and bid farewell to my colleagues but not my boss. This past 6 years have been torturous, affected my mental health by a lot and had to take medication as a result. Fortunately, today, I feel free.

Not sure if anyone is experiencing this right now, or has experienced it before but the feeling is priceless.

I'm going to be a full-time moon farmer and hopefully get the support of the community through my research about different crypto tokens. I know that these topics won't get much upvote but I hope there will be people supporting me in my journey.

Slovenia Launches Public Consultations on Crypto Taxation Law

Authorities in Slovenia have prepared new legislation tailored to determine how crypto holdings and transactions are taxed in the country. The proposal, aimed at clarifying the matter, has been submitted for public consultations this week, local media reports revealed.

Slovenia to Amend Tax Rules for Cryptocurrencies

The Finance Ministry in Ljubljana has opened public consultations on a draft law regulating cryptocurrency taxation, Slovenian media reported. The legislation is based on proposals made by the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS), which were announced in August of this year.

The amendments are expected to simplify the tax scheme pertaining to crypto assets. Under current rules, the taxable income from virtual currency operations depends on the circumstances in each case, and the tax office has to check numerous transactions made by taxpayers between purchases, sales, and conversions.

Under the upcoming regulations, the state will adopt a 10% flat tax for individuals exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat money. The same rate will be applicable to purchases made with digital coins. According to the Slovenian press, the yearly threshold for tax liability has been set at €15,000 (approx. $17,500).

If approved, the new tax regime would affect only private individuals and not those who hold cryptocurrency as an asset of their businesses. The Finance Ministry has estimated that the tax could accumulate between €100,000 ($116,000) and €500,000 ($580,000) annually in the first few years after its introduction.

Other changes concerning tax regulations in the EU member state are coming in the form of amendments to the income tax law due to enter into force on Jan. 1, 2022. Lawmakers have decided that these can be discussed further by the Finance Committee before they are approved or rejected by the legislature.

One of the key proposals is to reduce tax on capital and increase the general income tax allowance, media reports unveiled. The government’s intentions were criticized by the center-left opposition parties which boycotted the vote as 43 members of the Slovenian parliament supported the plan and three voted against it.

Slovenia, a small, bitcoin-friendly nation in Southeast Europe, has established itself as a leader in crypto adoption on the Old Continent. According to a report from last year, cafés, restaurants, hotels, hair salons, and sports facilities are among over 1,000 locations across the country that accept various cryptocurrencies for their services and offerings.

What have you learned by owning Crypto over the months/years in one sentence?

Investing in cryptocurrency has undoubtedly been incredibly volatile, as many of you are aware. During May, everyone thought we were on the verge of a Crypto winter, and the sentiment was pessimistic across the board.

However, I feel that many of us in the community remained strong and were able to maintain a dollar cost average over this time period in 2021. However, there were many more big drops for those who held on after 2013.

What have you truly learned from holding your crypto over the months/years, in one line, to those new and OG members in this community?

"Buy when others are fearful, sell when others are greedy" I'll say first, in one sentence.

What are your thoughts on this? I'm curious to know what this community thinks.

Don't ditch your alts if they haven't pumped yet

I think it's easier said than done, but if you're holding an alts that has been moving sideways for awhile and you start to see other alts pump, that is the worst possible time to jump ship and try to catch the ride up. Coins will pump at different times, and if you're holding a quality coin, or anything really in the top 10-20, odds are that it will have its day so just be patient and hodl on. Try looking for quality projects that are below their ath versus chasing ones creating new ath's every day.

Since I can comfortably say we are all under that threshold save Elongated Muskrat’s secret Reddit account when he lurks here, Mitt Romney basically flat out stated that it’ll basically force the extremely wealthy to purchase other hard assets and basically flee the stock market that has been giving protections to the masses via their job security and padding their IRAs and 401k. Also, I am aware that the wealth tax is just a temporary measure until they start implementing it to the middle class. I can just hope society as a whole can stop irresponsible fiscal policy.

How do you take profits in crypto?

Me along with many others in this sub are new to crypto within the last few months. Everything moves much faster than stocks and I’ve seen many posts in the daily about how to take profits.

I know many people say to DCA in and when you’ve reached your goal DCA. So far I’m up over 100-250% on multiple coins in the last 2 months and taking profits is the hardest part, due to the fact that I’m worrying about missing out on more gains.

So what are some recommendations for me and others about taking profits. What types of goals do you set for when you want to cash out, do you wait till your up X% amount and then take out your initial investment or do you take out 20% for example and then as it continues to rise X amount more you take out another 20% or so?

Please share some helpful tips.

Start-up CGU Raises $2.5 Million USD in Third Public Round

PRESS RELEASE. A crypto platform Crypto Gaming United (CGU), which has joined the crypto exchange TimeX on the 18th of october, made $2.5 million in a record-breaking six seconds since public token trading began. One of the co-founders of the project is a crypto-currency, DeFi and blockchain app entrepreneur Sergei Sergienko born in Russia.

CGU operates on the principles of uber-economy. Gamers don’t need to spend money on the initial purchase of NFT-characters. The platform rents them out to players in exchange for a share of their daily income. Meanwhile the games themselves reward players with income proportionate to their in-game skill and performance.

The open market sale of GCU tokens became the third and final investment round. For context, previously the seed and pre-IDO rounds had ended at $5 million and $10 million respectively. The tokens released during these rounds have a blocking period with a 3 year rights transfer schedule. This means that CGU’s tokens are now only available on the secondary market.

There were 10 million the GCU tokens available for sale in total, at the price of $0.25 each. In 6 seconds after the market opened, all tokens had been bought out.

“Success of every project is always measured by the market. We never expected the demand to be high enough to sell all the tokens in under 6 seconds. This makes it even more pleasant to realize the importance of the gaming crypto platform CGU to the market, and to feel the support coming from the project’s community” – the co-founder of the project Sergei Sergienko notes.

The next step for CGU according to Sergei is committing to the plan publicized in the token’s emission prospect – the company intends to increase the number of active players on the platform to a hundred thousand in the nearest future. The gathered funds will also be used for creation and development of CGU and DAO communities for the project.

Overall, Crypto Gaming United attracted $17.5 million during the 3 investment rounds. The total volume of CGU’s emission is 1 billion tokens, 26% of which belong to investors.

Reddit Seeks Senior Engineer for Platform That Features ‘NFT-Backed Digital Goods’

On Friday, American social news aggregation and discussion website, Reddit published a job listing seeking a senior backend engineer for a non-fungible token (NFT) platform. As part of Reddit’s development team, the new hire would help “design, build and ship backend services for millions of users to create, buy, sell and use NFT-backed digital goods.”

Reddit’s Job Application Is Looking for a Senior Engineer for a Possible NFT Platform

Reddit seems to be in the midst of creating a non-fungible token (NFT) feature on its platform and from a recent job description it seems to be a marketplace. Reddit is seeking a “senior backend engineer” for its “NFT platform,” the recently added job listing explains.

Reddit has already dipped its feet into cryptocurrency solutions and blockchain technology by leveraging Ethereum and Arbitrum. The job listing for a new engineer dedicated to NFT technology has a different focus than the firm’s community points system.

“If there is one thing we’ve noticed with NFTs, they too have an incredible power to create a sense of participation and belonging,” Reddit’s job post details. “With every new NFT project, a vibrant community of owners pops up with it. Fans of today’s biggest creators and brands are now flocking to buy digital goods directly from them — to support them, to gain exclusive access, and to feel a greater sense of connection with them.”

The company’s job listing adds:

Over time, we believe this will only grow, and NFTs will play a central role in how fans support their favorite creators and communities.

Reddit: ‘Experience With Crypto / NFTs / Go Not Required’

While the job description has multiple requirements like over five years of backend development experience, experience with cryptocurrencies, NFTs and the programming language Go is “not required.”

The backend, however, definitely will be dedicated to non-fungible token (NFT) services. The new senior backend engineer for the NFT platform will “design, build and ship backend services for millions of users to create, buy, sell and use NFT-backed digital goods,” Reddit’s listing notes.

Furthermore, the Reddit job listing explains that the company is accommodating in regards to the pandemic and the job can be done from a remote location.
