Cryptocurrency Exchange Hotbit Hacked: Systems Paralyzed, 2 Million Users Affected

Cryptocurrency Exchange Hotbit Hacked: Systems Paralyzed, 2 Million Users Affected

A cryptocurrency exchange with about 2 million users worldwide announced that it has “suffered a serious cyber attack.” A number of basic services are paralyzed and the attacker tried to access the exchange’s wallets. Consequently, the platform has shut down, stating that it needs to perform a “comprehensive inspection” which is expected to last one to two weeks.

Hotbit Says It ‘Suffered a Serious Cyber Attack’

Crypto exchange Hotbit announced Friday:

Hotbit just suffered a serious cyber attack starting around 08:00 PM UTC, April 29,2021, which led to the paralyzation of a number of some basic services.

The announcement adds that “the attackers also tried to hack into Hotbit’s wallets,” but the exchange claims that “the attempt was identified and stopped by our risk control system.”

The exchange says that it is “about to exceed 2 million registered users and has a huge service system architecture of more than 200 servers online, in order to ensure security, Hotbit team will completely rebuild all servers.”

While insisting that all customers’ assets are “safe and secure,” the exchange announced:

Hotbit team has shut down all services for inspection and restoration immediately.

Regarding the recovery period, the exchange expects it to take about 7-14 days, emphasizing that it “is expected to be no less than 7 days.” Furthermore, “The estimated time of recovery will be more as all things going on.”

Following the hack announcement, crypto transfers were spotted from Hotbit’s addresses. The exchange claims that the transfers resulted from them “creating new cold wallet.”

Cryptocurrency Exchange Hotbit Hacked: Systems Paralyzed, 2 Million Users Affected

The exchange explained that the attacker deleted the user database after failing to obtain assets. It also warned that “The attacker has already gained access to the database,” so users’ “registered phone number, email address and asset data” may have been leaked.

While stating that the database is backed up, the company says, “we are still uncertain whether the attacker has polluted data or not before the attack,” justifying the need for “a comprehensive inspection.”

What do you think about this Hotbit hack? Let us know in the comments section below.

Bitcoin-Lightning powered help for the Covid crisis in India

Help India fight the Covid emergency!

With the Covid-19 situation escalating in India faster than anyone expected, an unprecedented health crisis arises.

We decided to build covid.lastbit.io to help the crypto relief fund in India, with the mission to help them alleviate the Covid crisis in India by helping them get funds to provide healthcare and essentials to those suffering from the pandemic.

We built the site on top of the Bitcoin Lightning Network which means we enable anyone to donate anything starting from a few sats or cents. This wouldn’t be possible without this technology.

Help us help them. Every sat counts.

Let’s show the World what this community stands for!

It doesn't matter if you invested $100 or $500K. Bottom line is, you're doing something to improve your future.

Time in the market is the key factor, so if you're patient, you'll make decent money regardless of how much you have invested.

Even if all you have invested is a few hundred dollars, that amount could be significant to you, and the gains you receive will also be significant, A smaller investment at first is ideal to test the waters, it gives you time to understand how crypto works, and do your own research on projects. DCA helps manage your Crypto investment, and is a favoured method of the sub.

When I started I would've been amazed just to double my investment, things are looking good now thanks to my patience. Remember, only invest what you can afford to lose, do your own research, and don't be afraid to ask, we're friendly here.

Task Force Pushes Biden Administration to Tighten Cryptocurrency Regulation

A public-private task force has submitted a report to the Biden administration that includes recommendations to tighten the regulation of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, with the aim to combat ransomware. “The cryptocurrency sector that enables ransomware crime should be more closely regulated,” the task force wrote.

White House Urged to Tighten Crypto Regulation

A task force, organized by the Institute for Security and Technology, submitted a report entitled “Combating Ransomware” to the Biden administration Thursday with 48 recommendations, some of which aim at tightening crypto regulation.

The recommendations were developed by the Ransomware Task Force (RTF), which the report describes as “a broad coalition of volunteer experts from industry, government, law enforcement, civil society, cybersecurity insurers, and international organizations.” Its goal is to “provide a strategic framework for a systemic, global approach to mitigating the ransomware problem.”

The report claims that “Ransomware payments are typically made in cryptocurrency,” which “are difficult to trace.” One of the “Priority recommendations” outlined in the report reads:

The cryptocurrency sector that enables ransomware crime should be more closely regulated. Governments should require cryptocurrency exchanges, crypto kiosks, and over-the-counter (OTC) trading ‘desks’ to comply with existing laws, including Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and Combatting Financing of Terrorism (CFT) laws.

The report elaborates on some crypto-related recommendations, such as to “Develop new levers for voluntary sharing of cryptocurrency payment indicators,” “Incentivize voluntary information sharing between cryptocurrency entities and law enforcement,” and “Centralize expertise in cryptocurrency seizure, and scale criminal seizure processes.”

“The use of cryptocurrency adds to the challenge of identifying ransomware criminals, as payments with these currencies are difficult to attribute to any individual,” the report details. “Ransomware criminals can also obscure their transactions through cryptocurrency ‘mixing services.'” It also notes that some groups will also demand payment in privacy coins, such as Monero. However, the task force pointed out that currently, these coins “are not as liquid as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.”

Members of the RTF include the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.K. National Crime Agency (NCA), and representatives from the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), U.K. National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s National Cybercrime Coordination Unit.

“Ransoms paid by private firms siphon millions of dollars toward criminal enterprise every year,” the report adds, noting that “The total amount paid by ransomware victims increased by 311% in 2020, reaching nearly $350 million worth of cryptocurrency.”

What do you think about this task force pushing for the government to tighten crypto regulation? Let us know in the comments section below.

Popular Talk Show Host Ellen Degeneres Asks About Cryptocurrency — Mark Cuban Urges Her to Accept Dogecoin

Popular Talk Show Host Ellen Degeneres Asks About Cryptocurrency — Mark Cuban Urges Her to Accept Dogecoin

Popular talk show host Ellen Degeneres asked Shark Tank star Mark Cuban about cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens during the Ellen Degeneres Show which aired on Tuesday. Besides explaining cryptocurrency to Degeneres, Cuban tried to convince her to accept dogecoin in her shop.

Ellen Degeneres Tries to Understand Dogecoin

Shark Tank star Mark Cuban appeared on the Ellen Degeneres Show on Tuesday. Degeneres is a popular comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. Cuban is the owner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Dallas Mavericks.

“Today, Mark Cuban taught me about dogecoin. I’m still not sure I understand it, or know how to pronounce it, but it sure is fun to say,” Degeneres tweeted.

Popular Talk Show Host Ellen Degeneres Asks About Cryptocurrency — Mark Cuban Urges Her to Accept Dogecoin

Degeneres asked Cuban about cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). “Is that something that we should all be looking at?” she said.

“The thing about NFTs is they’re just digital collectibles,” Cuban described. “Don’t think about the technology at all. It’s just one more thing to collect, only it happens to be digital.” The Shark Tank star added: “If you think about everything on your phone that you value, particularly younger kids, their more valuable possessions are things on their phone. An NFT is just a digital collectible that you can buy, hold, sell like any other collectible.”

Prior to airing the interview with Cuban, Degeneres launched her first-ever NFT to raise money for the World Central Kitchen (WCK). “Ellen is jumping on the latest internet craze for a good cause by auctioning off a never-before-sold monologue and selfie featuring her original artwork, ‘Woman with Stick Cat,’” the auction site describes.

On the subject of cryptocurrency, Cuban explained to Degeneres that it “is just an asset to invest in.” He continued: “Bitcoin is like a digital version of gold. Ethereum is a digital version of a currency. And then you got dogecoin which is just fun but the weird part about it, it went from being a cryptocurrency joke to now becoming something that’s becoming a digital currency.”

The Dallas Mavericks started accepting dogecoin for payments in March through Bitpay. Cuban further said:

At the Mavs, we sell a lot of merchandise for dogecoin and you should look at it for the Ellen shop. You guys could sell a whole lot of stuff for dogecoin.

Degeneres replied: “We sure will do that.”

Noting that she was previously interested in investing in real estate, Degeneres said: “Now, I’m interested in dogecoin and I really want to know more about this.”

Cuban obliged, saying that “it’s crazy, the craziest thing ever” before proceeding to explain how dogecoin started as a meme cryptocurrency. The owner of the Dallas Mavericks then discussed the cryptocurrency as an investment, noting that dogecoin is “a better investment than buying a lottery ticket.”

However, Degeneres said that she is skeptical about the know-your-customer (KYC) process and having to give her social security number when signing up to buy dogecoin through a service like Robinhood. Cuban, on the other hand, said he is less concerned about it.

Do you think Ellen Degeneres will invest in dogecoin and accept it for payments in her shop? Let us know in the comments section below.

Paypal CEO Says Demand for Cryptocurrencies Is ‘Multiple-Fold’ of Initial Expectations

Paypal CEO Says Demand for Cryptocurrencies Is 'Multiple-Fold' of Initial Expectations

The CEO of payments giant Paypal, Dan Schulman, has revealed that the demand for cryptocurrencies has been “multiple-fold” of his company’s initial expectations. Paypal’s Venmo recently began rolling out cryptocurrency features to enable Venmo users to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin.

Demand for Cryptocurrencies Exceeds Paypal’s Expectations

Paypal CEO Dan Schulman talked about cryptocurrency, particularly bitcoin, in an interview with Time Magazine, published Sunday. Paypal is present in more than 200 countries and deals in more than 100 currencies. Last year, the company processed 15.4 billion payments, with a value of $936 billion. The company has about 30 million merchants in its network.

Schulman began by sharing his story of how he used Paypal’s crypto service to buy boots and paid for them with bitcoin. Noting that it only took a few clicks and a few seconds to buy with the cryptocurrency, he said that “It was pretty cool.” A big initiative of his company is “helping move digital currency into the mainstream, by adding cryptocurrency services,” the CEO described.

One of the questions he was asked during the interview was “What does this pending shift to digital currencies mean for the financial system as we know it?” Schulman replied, “In the next five to 10 years, you’re going to see more change in the financial system than you have over the past 10 to 20 years,” adding:

Demand on the crypto side has been multiple-fold to what we initially expected. There’s a lot of excitement.

Schulman also explained that Paypal has “been looking at digital forms of currency and DLT for six years or so.”

However, he noted: “But I thought it was early, and I thought the cryptocurrencies at the time were much more assets than they were currency. They were too volatile to be a viable currency. And it was still a little bit too much of people not really understanding what they were going to get into, and what we really wanted to do is make sure that it became a little more mainstream so that we would work hand-in-hand with regulators before we put anything out into the market.”

Paypal launched its crypto service for U.S. customers in November last year. The company then established a business unit dedicated to cryptocurrency in February and enabled crypto payments at millions of stores with the “checkout with crypto” launch in late March. Last week, Venmo started rolling out crypto trading for its 70 million users to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies.

What do you think about the Paypal CEO’s comments about bitcoin and cryptocurrencies? Let us know in the comments section below.

Quantum Fund Cofounder Jim Rogers Insists Governments Could Ban Cryptocurrencies to Maintain Monopoly

Veteran investor Jim Rogers, who co-founded the Quantum Fund with billionaire investor George Soros, is still worried about governments outlawing bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. “If cryptocurrencies become successful, most governments will outlaw them, because they don’t want to lose their monopoly,” he said.

Jim Rogers Still Worried About Government Banning Bitcoin

Renowned investor and George Soros’ former business partner who co-founded of the Quantum Fund and Soros Fund Management, Jim Rogers, still believes that the government can ban bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Noting that he “never bought or sold any cryptocurrencies,” Rogers told Kitco News’ Michelle Makori last week:

If cryptocurrencies become successful, most governments will outlaw them, because they don’t want to lose their monopoly.

“Every government in the world is working on computer money now, including the U.S. The Chinese are there already. I cannot imagine that governments are going to say ‘ok, this is our crypto money, or you can use their crypto money.’ That’s not the way governments work, historically,” he opined.

Rogers added: “Money is going to be on the computer. It already is in China. In China, you can’t take a taxi with money. You have to have the money on your phone, you can’t even buy ice cream. So it’s happening, but I doubt if it’s going to be someone else’s money. History shows it will be government money.”

He believes that the biggest threat to bitcoin is government regulation “if it becomes successful,” but not “as long as it remains a trading vehicle.”

The Quantum Fund co-founder further noted:

I know guys that are making a lot of money trading it, it’s a wonderful trading vehicle, apparently. But, if it becomes a currency, which is what the crypto people say that it will be, I cannot imagine that any government, or many governments, in the world will say ‘ok, you can use our money, or their money.’ That’s not what history shows.

Commenting on the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell comparing bitcoin to gold in terms of how they are both used for speculation, Rogers agreed that people are using both as trading vehicles. However, he added that history would indicate that silver and gold would probably have a better future than cryptocurrencies because they are not trying to compete with the dollar or other sovereign currencies.

Rogers is not the only one who has warned about governments stepping in and outlawing cryptocurrencies. Others include Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio, The Big Short’s Michael Burry, and Ron Paul.

However, many people also said that governments cannot outlaw bitcoin. A commissioner with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Hester Peirce, recently said that governments would be “foolish” to try to ban bitcoin and that banning it would be like shutting down the internet. In addition, she said that “it’s very difficult to ban something that’s essentially a peer-to-peer technology.”
