There are so many benefits to using a cryptocurrency, that it would seem foolish to neglect such an invention. For example, it allows you to send money anywhere in the world in an instant, with basically no fees involved. Everyone can be included in the financial system, it will change the way we interact with money, it can prevent fraud, and much more.

Report: Egyptian Pound Reaches New Low Against US Dollar Despite Flexible Exchange Rate Regime
The exchange rate of the Egyptian pound versus the U.S. dollar fell to a new low on Jan. 11 after it tapped 32.14 per greenback. The currency’s latest significant depreciation came just a few months after it adopted a flexible exchange rate regime. According to the International Monetary Fund, the monetary authorities in Egypt have pledged not to intervene in currency markets.
Flexible Exchange Rate Regime
Just a few months after plunging by more than 15% versus the U.S. dollar, the Egyptian pound tapped a new low of more than 32 units per greenback on Jan. 11. According to a Reuters report, the pound’s latest depreciation has prompted some analysts to question the extent to which the central bank wants the pound to fall.
As reported by Bitcoin.com News in October 2022, the pound’s official exchange rate versus the dollar fell from just under 20 units per dollar to 23.09 per dollar after Egyptian monetary authorities agreed to abandon the fixed exchange rate regime. In return, Cairo would receive a $3 billion financial package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Following the currency’s latest fall, some Egyptian analysts quoted in the Reuters report believed the pound had reached its lower limit. Others like Farouk Soussa of Goldman Sachs said it is still difficult to conclude that the pound versus the dollar exchange rate had reached an equilibrium.
“When portfolio investors start to come back in, that is when the market will have judged equilibrium. But there is no direct way of observing equilibrium,” Soussa reportedly said.
Monica Malik, an economist at the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank said the pound’s latest plunge alone does not guarantee that investors will return. The economist said clearing the foreign exchange backlog may be one step that reassures investors. However, this requires new USD liquidity and according to Malik “there is currently no visibility where this liquidity will come from.”
Meanwhile, in the IMF’s Egypt staff country report, the global lender revealed that the government in Cairo had promised not to intervene in currency markets. As per its agreement with the global lending institution, Egyptian monetary authorities would only intervene in cases of excessive volatility.

Metamask Wallet Users Warned to Be on the Lookout for Address Poisoning Attacks
To avoid becoming victims of an address poisoning attack, Metamask wallet users should ditch the practice of copying and pasting wallet addresses, the crypto wallet app support team has warned. Metamask users should instead “develop a habit of thoroughly checking every single character of an address” before sending a transaction.
Scammers Exploiting Users’ Carelessness
Metamask crypto wallet users should be wary of a new scammer tactic known as the address poisoning attack, which is dependent on the user’s “carelessness and haste above all else,” the team behind the software cryptocurrency wallet has warned. The Metamask team added that while the attack method may seem harmless, “it can just as easily result in a loss of funds.”
A new scam called 'Address Poisoning' is on the rise. Here's how it works: after you send a normal transaction, the scammer sends a $0 token txn, 'poisoning' the txn history. (1/3)
— MetaMask Support (@MetaMaskSupport) January 11, 2023
In its Jan. 11 statement that explains how scammers use this new tactic to steal from unsuspecting users, the Metamask Support team said cybercriminals and scammers often exploit common behavior among crypto users such as the copying and pasting of wallet addresses. Although this ensures that funds are sent to the correct address, the team warned that scammers are aware that many users are unwilling to memorize their wallet addresses. The statement said:
“Since they’re so long, crypto wallet addresses are typically shortened. You might see the first lot of characters only, or sometimes you may see the initial 5-10 or so and the final 5-10 or so, skipping the middle. This is how most people recognize addresses: not by knowing every single character, but by becoming familiar with the start and finish. This is the tendency that address poisoning preys on.”
Users Must Check Every Single Character in a Wallet Address
According to the Metamask Support team, scammers often initiate a poisoning attack by sending a negligible amount to a dummy wallet address which closely matches that of a Metamask wallet user. After this, the scammer will wait and hope the targeted user[s] will “inadvertently copy their address from your transaction history and paste it elsewhere.”
Since transactions like these are said to be immutable or irreversible, when funds are sent to an incorrect address, they are lost forever. Therefore, wallet users need to take all precautions including “checking every single character.” The Metamask Support team said wallet users must try to end the practice of copying addresses from their transaction history.
Instead, wallet users should “develop a habit of thoroughly checking every single character of an address before you send a transaction.”

I just wanna point out that this was the best bear market BTC has ever had in history
In every bear market in BTC history its always down 80-85%+..This time we went 77%.Taking into consideration this was also first macro economy bear market in BTC history on verge of recession, high inflation, QT, exchanges collapse, BTC held much better than people thought. Most people was sure it was going down at least 80%+ or around 10-12k and that actually that was realistic expectation.
I believe 15.4k was the bottom as there were no sellers even after FTX collapse..
Also unemployment is still really low, inflation going down a lot, Q4 gdp growth prediction 4%,earnings are still decent. All that is going for high chance of getting a soft landing which market is starting to price in.
Congratulation to everyone who bottom at 15k bottom. Good luck, see you above 25k😁

Bill Gates Props Up AI Against Metaverse and Web3 Tech
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has given his opinion about the relevance of Web3, metaverse, and AI (artificial intelligence), a set of technologies in development today. Gates stated that AI was “the big” revolutionary technology that is comparable to what the internet was in the year 2000.
Bill Gates Considers AI Tech ‘Revolutionary’
Bill Gates, one of the co-founders of software behemoth Microsoft, has issued his opinion when it comes to the state and relevance of several emergent technologies being developed today.
In a recent Reddit AMA, Gates showed a preference for AI (artificial intelligence) over other alternatives such as Web3 and the metaverse, when asked about the relevance of this set of technologies being developed, and the similarities these shared with the internet during its early years.
Gates stated:
AI is the big one. I don’t think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary but AI is quite revolutionary.
However, Gates stated that his occupations went in other directions, as he was more focused on innovations like helping pregnant women know if they need hospital assistance in advance using ultrasound tech, and treating conditions like malnutrition and anemia.
Microsoft and AI
Gates also gave his take directly on generative AI, a branch of intelligence that can create its own content, rather than deriving it from other available works. On this, Gates declared:
I am quite impressed with the rate of improvement in these AIs. I think they will have a huge impact.
The billionaire has had a negative vision of crypto, warning in February 2021 that users with less money than Elon Musk should be careful about putting their funds in cryptocurrency, and also explaining it was based on the “greater fool theory” back in June. He has been more positive about the development of the metaverse, predicting a digital meetings pivot from 2D images to 3D virtual spaces back in 2021.
While Gates is no longer connected to Microsoft, as he abandoned the company back in 2020, Satya Nadella, the current CEO of the company, seems to share his train of thought. Microsoft is reportedly eyeing an investment of $10 billion in Openai, the company behind the popular Chatgpt AI bot, that would value the company at $29 billion.
This move, which would allow Microsoft to have 49% of the shares of the company, is a signal of the significance that the organization assigns to the AI sector.

Bitcoin Price Spikes To $19K, Why BTC Could Correct Lower In Short Term - NewsBTC
from Google Alert - Bitcoin https://ift.tt/oCZHpV4
For the SIXTH STRAIGHT YEAR: Announcing The Top Ten Crypto Index Fund Experiment for 2023!
The 2023 Top Ten Cryptocurrency Index Fund Experiment Has Begun!
For the sixth year in a row, I’m excited to announce the launch of the Top Ten Cryptocurrency Index Fund Experiment for 2023.
For those unfamiliar with the Top Ten Crypto Index Fund Experiments, my annual tradition is to buy $100 of each of the Top Ten Cryptos on New Year’s Day. I’ve been doing this annually since January 1st, 2018.
The Top Ten Experiments have now purchased a total of $6,000 in crypto since January 2018.
The 2023 Top Ten Portfolio includes the following cryptos, in descending order as per coinmarketcap.com on January 1st, 2023:
That’s a $1000 investment on the 1st of January, 2023, ($100 each) of #1 BTC, #2 ETH, #5 BNB, #6 XRP, #7 BUSD, #8 DOGE, #9 ADA, #10 MATIC, #12 DOT, and #13 LTC.
Long time Top Ten Experiment followers will notice I’m again breaking the tradition of strictly investing in the Top Ten by market cap, no matter what. Three stablecoins in the Top Ten this year is a bit much, so I included #12 DOT and #13 LTC and USDC and USDT are out. I made a similar decision with the 2022 Top Ten Portfolio.
The 2023 Top Ten Portfolio = Top Ten – USDT – USDC + #12 (DOT) + #13 (LTC).
BUSD will remain in the 2023 Top Ten Portfolio.
Why keep a stablecoin in the portfolio at all? Consistency: for better or worse, I included USDT in the 2019 Top Ten Portfolio. Including a stablecoin in the 2023 Top Ten is my attempt at an honest/fair comparison between different year’s portfolios.
Why BUSD instead of USDC or USDT? Both Tether and Circle have been included in past Experiments, it’s BUSD’s turn this year.
Why were stablecoins included in the Top Ten Experiments in the first place? Check out the FAQs.
Where Did You Purchase The 2023 Top Ten Crypto?
I get this question a lot. Where does someone actually buy all these different cryptos? Details below:
I used Uniswap on the Polygon network to purchase WBTC and MATIC:
Curve to purchase WETH, also on Polygon:
I purchased BNB, XRP, BUSD, and DOGE\* on Pancakeswap on the Binance Smart Chain:
* 2023 marks the first time a dogcoin has started the year in the Top Ten – much wow!
And finally, I used Binance to purchase ADA, LTC, and DOT at the prices below:
Top Ten Experiment Features for 2023:
While attempting to stick to the original intent to keep the Experiments simple and beginner friendly, I will incorporate some slightly more advanced concepts.
- DeFi: 2022 was a horrible year for crypto CeFi, where mismanagement and corruption prevailed. To highlight DeFi options to my readers, I used more decentralized finance protocols than ever before.
- Reporting: I will continue to track the data for all Experiments, but I’ll focus on 2023 Top Ten Portfolio reports + one other Top Ten Portfolio from 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, or 2022 on a rotating basis, producing two main posts per month.
- Crypto Market Index Token: The first Top Ten Crypto Experiment was started on 1 January 2018 in an attempt to capture the gains of the entire cryptocurrency market.
In a tradition started last year, I will see how my homemade Top Ten stacks up to emerging Crypto Index products. Last year, I compared the Experiment with Cryptex’s Total Crypto Market Cap Token (TCAP beat the 2022 Top Ten Portfolio -72% to -80%).
This year’s friendly competition will be between The Top Ten Portfolio and The Alongside Crypto Market Index Token (AMKT).
AMKT is an ERC-20 token that represents a cap weighted index of the Top 25 Cryptocurrencies (minus stablecoins) backed 1:1 by the underlying assets represented within the index. Since the Top 25 represent approximately 97% of the value within crypto, AMKT should be an excellent proxy for the entire cryptocurrency market.
Judging by past years, the Top Ten is in for an uphill battle against AMKT: one of the major lessons from my Experiments is that Total Market nearly always outperforms the homemade portfolios. Specifically, here is the ROI data (as of 1 January 2023), buying the Top Ten at equal weight vs. capturing the entire market:
- 2018 Top Ten Portfolio: -59% for the Top Ten vs. +38% for the total market cap
- 2019 Top Ten Portfolio: +126% for the Top Ten vs. +525% for the total market cap
- 2020 Top Ten Portfolio: +251% for the Top Ten vs. +319% for the total market cap
- 2021 Top Ten Portfolio: +40% for the Top Ten vs. +3% for the total market cap (an outlier – if history is any indication, I expect the Top Ten gains to fall behind the Total Market Cap over time, like the other Experiments).
- 2022 Top Ten Portfolio: -80% for the Top Ten vs. -64% for the total market cap
To kick off our friendly competition, Alongside has kindly provided 17.15 AMKT\*, worth $1,000 on the 1st of January, 2023.
*The AMKT will be sold at the end of 2023 and donated to charity
Here’s the question I’ll be tracking: as the months/years go by, would I have been better off just buying $1,000 of AMKT instead of going through the effort of creating a homemade $1,000 Top Ten Index Fund? I’m satisfied with the ROI on my $1k/year, set-it-and-forget-it approach: but is it possible to do even better with less effort?
Like every year, I’m excited to launch the latest iteration of the Top Ten Crypto Index Fund Experiment. If you’re new to the Experiments, welcome! If you’ve been following over the years, many thanks for sticking around so long.
The first monthly report for the 2023 Top Ten Portfolio will drop in early February. The year end 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 reports will be released in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, you’re welcome to pour through all the monthly data here.
Happy New Year and here’s hoping for a good coming year in crypto!

Cryptocurrency Exchanges Still Fighting Private Banks for Right to Open Bank Accounts in Chile
The conflict between banks and cryptocurrency exchanges in Chile is still developing, as some banks are reticent to serve this kind of institution. A new report prepared by exchanges reports that most of these banks refuse to include crypto companies as customers for risks that are nevertheless managed in the case of servicing other kinds of customers.
Cryptocurrency Exchanges Still Fighting Banks in Chile
Cryptocurrency exchanges and other crypto-related companies are still fighting private banks for the right to open and manage bank accounts in Chile. The legal fight, which started back in 2018 when a series of exchanges had their bank accounts closed by several banking institutions, will be defined this year before a national free competition court.
Buda.com, a Chilean exchange, prepared a document that concluded that banks are colluding to deny their services to cryptocurrency exchanges for reasons applicable to other businesses, like companies operating with jewelry, watches, vehicles of all kinds, works of art, or antiques.
Regarding these businesses, the document states that they “are universally recognized as a possible means for money laundering – and who, moreover, are regulated by being obligated subjects in comparative law, but not in Chilean law,” and criticizes using money laundering and the lack of clear regulations in crypto as a mere pretext for taking uncompetitive actions.
Explaining the Conflict
The defense of private banks centers around the fact that there are still no defined protocols for managing risks associated with cryptocurrency operations, and that money laundering activities, if happen, would be unable to be detected and handled. However, exchanges discuss that banks act against exchanges based on no clear laws, with 79% of the closing or service-denying events happening in a period of three months.
Bice Bank, one of the banks included in the lawsuit, states that it had defined it would not operate with cryptocurrency-based companies three years before the trial started, establishing it would do so only when there was due diligence and the approval of the anti-money laundering and terrorism financing regulator.
On the other hand, Security Bank, another financial institution stated that its decision derives from the fact that cryptocurrency exchanges “do not have the necessary regulation to adequately prevent these risks and they will not have it in the short term either.”
However, regulation in the field is slowly coming apart, as Chile approved and recently sanctioned a fintech law that includes cryptocurrency in its scope. Also, some exchanges have already opened accounts after signing due diligence agreements, as Buda did with Bci bank in October.
What do you think about the legal conflict between banks and cryptocurrency exchanges in Chile? Tell us in the comments section below.
