Namibian Central Bank: Virtual Assets ‘Remain Without Legal Tender Status’ but Merchants Can Still Accept Them as Payment

The Bank of Namibia recently said it has brought virtual assets and virtual asset service providers under its fintech innovations regulatory framework, and that it plans to amend applicable laws and regulations. According to the central bank’s governor, there is an ongoing “battle between regulated and unregulated money on the one hand and sovereign versus non-sovereign money on the other.”

Amending Applicable Laws

The Bank of Namibia (BON) has said that while cryptocurrencies have no legal tender status in the country, it has now brought “virtual assets (VA) and virtual assets service providers (VASP) under its Fintech Innovations Regulatory Framework in a phased approach, through its innovation hub.” The central bank added it is also considering amending “applicable laws and regulations diligently in consultation with other relevant authorities.”

In a recently issued statement, the BON also clarified that even though privately issued digital currencies are still not legally recognized, merchants and traders can accept payment in this form provided they are “willing to participate in such an exchange or trade.”

The bank’s new position on digital currencies appears to suggest the BON may be warming up to cryptocurrencies. As reported by Bitcoin.com News, the central bank has in the past said it did “not recognise, support and recommend the possession, utilisation and trading of cryptocurrencies by members of the public.” The bank also warned Namibians there would be no legal recourse in the event they lost money.

CBDCs Hold ‘Immense Potential Benefit’

However, Johannes Gawaxab, the BON governor and a past critic of cryptocurrencies, is quoted in the statement acknowledging the future of money is now a critical point. He explained:

The future of money is at an inflection point. The battle between regulated and unregulated money on the one hand, and sovereign versus non-sovereign money on the other.

Still, Gawaxab said he believes central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) offer something which privately issued or created digital currencies cannot. The BON governor nonetheless cautioned that his organization, which is also exploring and studying the feasibility of rolling out a CBDC, will not be rushed into doing this.

“If CBDCs are explored and implemented with due care and caution, they could hold immense potential benefit for a more stable, safer, more widely available, and less expensive means of payment than private forms of digital money,” said Gawaxab.

Meanwhile, the BON revealed that it planned to release a consultation paper on CBDCs in October.

I don't like it either but FB, IG and TT getting into crypto is bullish af.

The sentiment on this sub, all reddit subs and crypto twitter is that these web 2 companies are absolutely NOT welcome to our world. We all know about their data collection abuses, algorithm manipulation and so much other BS that has made us and governments not trust them but let's get real for a minute. Do you guys even know how many world wide users these 3 planforms have? Probably 500 times the amount of crypto holders in the world so calm down with all your criticism. We don't have to go back. We are already in web3 and way ahead of the majority of the population. For a lot of folks not in crypto yet their journey will start in a very different way compared to most of us here.

In a market as lame as this one having these companies get involved a little bit in crypto is not such a bad thing. Think how many billions will be onboarded by mere curiosity. Whether these people decide to stay doing crypto with these companies or get a hard wallet and start buying NFT's from Looks Rare or doing DEFI on a layer 2 or a ZK roll up is up to them but there could possibly be no better intro for these people at this time than the Tik Tok, Instagram and Face book.

So I don't think this is entirely a bad thing. When the next bull market arrives these 3 companies will play a big part in bringing adoption to the space and this is going to happen whether we at this sub and the rich cryptopians OGs at crypto twitter like it or not. It's called change. Get used to it and stop complaining because we might just be very well benefited from these companies entering crypto and we don't even have to use them at all. Leave this for the rest of the world.

Decentralized Web3 Protocol Golden Raises $40 Million Backed by A16z

golden

Golden, a startup that seeks to build a decentralized data hub, has raised $40 million dollars in a Series B funding round. The round, which was led by a16z crypto, will allow the company to keep building its concept, which revolves around combining data submission and validation with Web3-based token incentives.

Golden Raises $40 Million to Build Decentralized Encyclopedia

Golden, a decentralized data hub company, has announced it has raised $40 million in its latest Series B funding round. The round, which was led by a16z crypto, had the participation of many big names in the VC industry including Opensea Ventures and leaders associated with Solana, Protocol Labs, Figma, and others.

The company, which seeks to pair Web3 with the construction of a solid and verifiable information hub, will use the funds to keep building on its business model, which revolves around providing reliable data to customers. This is because current data mining models have proven to be unreliable, according to Jude Gomila, CEO and founder of Golden.

Gomila believes the only way of constructing this global data repository is by creating incentives for users to contribute to the initiative. Golden provides a protocol that rewards users for the verification and submission of data and ostensibly has ways of punishing the introduction of fake data to the system. The protocol also has a means of giving increased rewards to users that submit the most used and requested data. In this way, the introduction of useful data is incentivized.

Business Model

The operation of the protocol includes public NFTs (non-fungible tokens) that have information about any concept included in the network (for example, Coinbase, Open Source Software, or Pancakeswap). Users can contribute by entering data into these structures and will be rewarded through these contributions, which will have to be validated.

The business model of the protocol is based on the sale of tokens to third parties that would want to use the validated data for different reasons. Given the volatility of the cryptocurrency market, these institutions will be able to acquire and burn said tokens for stable credits that allow them to store this right to data access in a safer fashion.

While the protocol is currently in testnet, it has reportedly managed to gather the attention of 35,000 users already using the app and participating in data submission and validation, and is expected to launch in mainnet in Q3 2023.

What do you think about Golden and its $40 million Series B funding round? Tell us in the comments section below.

UPDATE: Bitcoin CEO announces 0.75% Transaction Fee Increase

https://preview.redd.it/vxhhkdalqwr91.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=a425ba6faeb0e4a9c52d2f76c55e27aebb2a5126

Crypto markets had a rocky start on Tuesday, October 2022 after announcements from the Bitcoin CEO that Bitcoin Inc was planning on increasing transaction fees by 75 basis points. While most cryptos are still open for trading, Solana has closed the day up 3.15%.

The Bitcoin mogul explained the reasoning behind the unexpected news. He claimed that an increase in transaction fees would incentivize more miners to increase operation and strengthen the network. The Bitcoin CEO hopes that a parabolic move in hash rate could attract new VC investment and partnerships. This comes at a time when prices have been lulling due to Alex Mashinsky still being not in jail.

Those among the “hodler” cohort welcomed the announcement from the CEO. Their coins sit in cold storage, never accruing transaction fees. One long time holder and Reddit user named u/mtgoxftw, who describes himself as not knowing “sh*t about f*ck,” said he’s hoping the fee increase can push Bitcoin to $100k by the end of 2021.

Lastly, some are speculating this was the first move to eventually making fees a percentage of the transaction that were to be burned, similar to how safe moon operates. We reached out to several users of Safemoon for comment, though none responded. A source later informed us that it was because they aren’t able to read.

Only time will tell if the Bitcoin CEO has made the right move, or if he will be forced to reduce transaction fees in the future as part of his mandate to increase transaction volume.

Samsung Latam Launches ‘House of Sam’ Metaverse Experience in Decentraland

samsung latam

Samsung Latam, the regional division of the electronics giant, has decided to present its own space in Decentraland, an Ethereum-based metaverse platform. The space, which will be named “House of Sam,” will allow users to have virtual contact with different products of the brand, and play mini-games to win Samsung-branded rewards for their avatars.

Samsung Latam Dives Into the Metaverse

Samsung Latam, the Latin American regional division of the electronics company, has decided to dedicate an online space to increasing the visibility of its brand in the digital world. The company will maintain a space called “House of Sam” in Decentraland, one of the biggest Ethereum-based metaverse platforms.

According to reports, the goal of this move is to bring the brand closer to a new generation of consumers using the metaverse as a tool. The space is already open for users, being launched on September 1 with a virtual show from the Brazilian trio, Melim.

About the launch of this new digital space and its objectives, Arthur Wong, marketing director for Samsung Latam, stated:

Our customers will be able to interact with each other and participate in exclusive shows, courses, and events that we will offer for free at Decentraland, one of the most democratic and open spaces in the metaverse. Our goal is to be ever closer to Gen Z, our younger consumers who no longer draw boundaries between what is physical and what is virtual.

Activities and Prizes

The House of Sam will offer a series of mini-games related to the brand, that will also present prizes to users in the form of exclusive wearables for its avatars in Decentraland. Some of the most iconic products of the Samsung brand are also present in the virtual space, including the Freestyle portable projector.

This is one of many moves Samsung has already made directly into the metaverse, though the company has also been active in the NFT (non-fungible token) marketplace and the bitcoin mining chip business. In July, the company launched another metaverse experience named Space Tycoon as part of the Roblox platform. In January, the company opened its own store in Decentraland.

What do you think about Samsung Latam’s dive into the Decentraland metaverse? Tell us in the comments section below.

Ten months ago, I combed through all the posts here to find the subs most despised coins. I combined into a single awful folio. This is an update on the FOLIO OF HATE. How much do you want it to fail? Does it still make you angry?

Good morning all,

We're in a bear market. Inflation is rampant. We're out of FIAT. The British pound is crushed. Shit sucks. But that doesn't mean we can't still have some fun right?

For those that were around at the beginning of the year, you might remember that I created this. The FOLIO OF HATE. I invested (yolo'd?) $100 into this subs most hated coins. Some coins are hated because of utility, some because of corruption, some because of the the shills. Whatever the reason, I decided to act on the theory that this sub can actually pick winners by investing into the ones that we all hate the most.

So, $100 was invested on the same day to each of the ten coins/tokens. Here is how it has fared.

Ten Month Performance

Down 64% or $640 in ten months.

What about the individual results? Surely they're not all bad? Right?

Best performer: USDT -0.08 %

Worst performer: LRC -87.22 %

Surprise Performer: BNB -47.36%

Individual Ten Month Performance

Despite the savagery of the capitulation and bear market, there are some interesting observations.

Personal points of interest:

  • Binance is the best non-stablecoin performer. This could be connected to the collapse of other exchanges/lenders. It is the only non-stablecoin that is not down more than 50%.
  • Despite the court issues plaguing Ripple, the XRP is still holding well comparatively.
  • Investing in Dogecoin - was a better investment than top guns Solana and Cardano.
  • Despite scamming millions, involved in court battles, and led by a corrupt CEO, Safemoon is not the worst performer.
  • Tether - FUCKING TETHER - is still the folios best performer.
  • The value of the folio has not really moved in the past 2-3 months. A seemingly flat movement has emerged during this time indicating a possible bottom for the FOLIO OF HATE may have been reached.

I am aware that perceptions and opinions shift over time, so it is of course possible that we hate these coins more than ever.

Original post for reference.

Taking Yield Farming to the Next Level With Animal Farm

As a result of DeFi protocols, access to finance has been democratized, allowing anyone with an Internet connection to gain access to opportunities and services. However, they only gained popularity after the ‘DeFi summer of 2020’ and the yield farming craze that followed.

The concept of yield farming has changed the way people view savings by becoming the standard means of generating passive income in the cryptosphere. Consequently, numerous DeFi protocols have developed their architecture and functionalities around yield farming. However, yield farming has remained virtually unchanged over the years despite its value.

Introducing Animal Farm

Animal Farm is a DeFi protocol that is modelled after George Orwell’s novel of the same name that criticizes centralized power. Unlike its competitors, it is the first and only decentralized ownership lending and yield aggregation protocol in the DeFi industry.

The platform uses two native tokens, DOGS ($AFD) *live October 18th*, the reward asset, and PIGS ($AFP), the governance token, which represents the platform’s ownership stake.

Dynamic Supply

In contrast to other DeFi platforms, Animal Farm utilizes a dynamic supply control algorithm. By employing this innovative algorithm, the supply of the DOGS ($AFD) token, which will launch on October 18th, and the PIGS token, is determined in a trustless, decentralized manner.

As a result of the supply control algorithm and tokenomics of DOGS ($AFD) and PIGS ($AFP), the supply is designed to remain stable and even become deflationary during times of low demand, thereby allowing for optimal pricing performance in all market conditions.

$AFP Giveaway – Join the Animal Farm Craze

The Animal Farm team will be conducting a giveaway contest in celebration of the full launch of the protocol on October 18th. After completing a series of tasks, one user will be awarded exactly $5,000 worth of BUSD. In order to avoid adding to the circulating supply of tokens, Animal Farm does not pay for promotion or marketing with native tokens. Therefore, the reward will be in BUSD.

Animal Farm Tokenomics & Reward Model

Launching on October 18th, DOGS ($AFD) has a unique vesting model which does not lock users’ tokens. By instead using a variable tax model, it has created an incentive structure that rewards those who secure profit in the form of BUSD and BNB dividends by staking DOGS ($AFD) instead of selling it on the market.

Stakers in Animal Farm’s ‘DogPound’ have the tax associated with transacting their DOGS ($AFD) reduced at a rate of 1% daily. This model perfectly aligns incentives for optimal performance. It rewards users for removing AFD tokens from circulation while allowing them to earn as the wealthy do by accumulating assets; this allows them to earn a dividend paid out in BNB.

70% of taxes placed on DOGS ($AFD) token transactions are swapped for BNB and paid out to the ‘DogPound’ loyalty staking contract, allowing DOGS ($AFD) stakers to reduce their DOGS ($AFD) transaction tax while earning a high yield BNB dividend.

30% of taxes on transacted DOGS ($AFD) tokens are swapped for BUSD and paid out to the ‘PigPen’ as a high-yield BUSD dividend. The platform owners receive 75% of the fees generated from deposits and withdrawals in BUSD, which are then distributed as a high-yield dividend to $AFP stakers in the PigPen. 25% of fees generated on the platform from deposits and withdrawal fees are utilized to buy DOGS ($AFD) and add AFD/BUSD liquidity, generating a consistent flow of DOGS ($AFD) buy pressure and locked decentralized liquidity.

Whenever $AFP or $AFD tokens are sold, 3% of the transaction is burned, which removes them from circulation forever, making them deflationary.

Higher Yield Through Lending

Decentralized lending is achieved by lending collateralised TVL (Total Value Locked) to Pancakeswap, the largest decentralized exchange on Binance Smart Chain (BSC). Thus, Animal Farm offers low-risk yield aggregation compounded on top of yield natively generated by the protocol. Yield generated through lending to Pancakeswap is converted to BUSD and paid out to ‘PigPen’ stakers. The users gain all the benefits of earning yield on Pancakeswap while earning additional cash flow on Animal Farm with improved incentive structures.

Governance

Not only are stakers of the $AFP token earning platform fees and taxes as owners of the platform, but they also have a vote on future roadmap proposals.

Sustainability & Performance

With all of the mechanics detailed above, rewarding users for removing $AFP & $AFD tokens from circulation and paying out a dividend for doing so in the non-native token (BUSD & BNB), and dynamic control of the supply based on underlying demand, Animal Farm and it’s native tokens are designed to be the highest performing yield generating assets ever created.

Closing Thoughts

Animal Farm is ready to become one of the leaders in the DeFi world. There is an extensive roadmap, which includes already developed products, generous incentives, an appealing referral program, an elegant user interface, a distinctive architecture, and an innovative yield-generating system that performs at all market levels.

To learn more about Animal Farm, how to purchase $AFP now, and prepare for the full launch on October 18th, visit the official website and socials (Twitter, Discord, Youtube).
